What makes a Foothills dumpster job different?

Smaller lots, lots of mobile homes and a big seasonal crowd. Those three things shape the size you pick and when you book.

The Census numbers show how different the Foothills is from the rest of the county.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024, via Census Reporter.

Almost half the homes here are mobile homes. About 1 in 4 homes sits empty part of the year. That points to cleanouts, downsizing and seasonal open-up jobs more than big builds. It also means tight lots and park rules come up often.

For the ZIP as a whole, 85367 shows 45.5% mobile homes and 23.3% seasonal units in the same survey.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in the Foothills?

On your own driveway, usually not. For a county road or right-of-way, call Yuma County Development Services at (928) 817-5000 before you book.

Fortuna Foothills is not a city. It is a Census-designated place, an unincorporated community inside Yuma County. That means City of Yuma permits don’t cover it. Work in a county road right-of-way falls under the County’s encroachment standards (2023 edition).

We could not find a written county rule on whether a roll-off needs a permit. So ask the County directly. Development Services is at 2351 W. 26th St. If you aren’t sure your lot is in the county, ask them that too.

Your HOA or park can have its own rules on top of the County’s. Read more about street, driveway and HOA placement in Yuma.

Can a dumpster go in an RV park or HOA community?

Often yes, with written approval from the park manager or HOA first. Space for the truck matters as much as the rules.

We found no Yuma-wide rule for parks or HOAs. Each one sets its own. In general, HOAs often require approval, screening or limited hours for dumpsters. Ask the office these questions before you call for delivery.

  • Where on the lot or common area can the dumpster sit?
  • How many days can it stay?
  • Are there quiet hours for delivery and pickup?
  • Does a neighbor’s space or a shared road need to stay clear?

Then check the truck’s path. One national broker says its truck needs about 60 feet of straight-line space and 23 to 25 feet of overhead clearance. Carports, awnings, wires and park trees often get in the way. Ask the driver to set the box on boards if you’re worried about your driveway or pad.

What size dumpster do I need for a mobile-home cleanout?

Start with a 10-yard on a tight lot. A full single-wide or double-wide cleanout may need a 20-yard if the space allows.

The 10-yard is about 14 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 3.5 feet high. It holds about 3 pickup-truck loads, based on Budget Dumpster’s published sizes. That smaller footprint is why it fits more Foothills lots.

A 10-yard in Yuma typically includes about 2 tons. Each extra ton typically costs $50–$100. Tell the hauler about heavy items like rock or old steps. See the 10-yard dumpster dimensions and uses, or read more on mobile-home and estate cleanouts.

Pulling out the whole home is demolition, not a cleanout. See construction and demolition dumpsters for that.

When should snowbirds set up a dumpster in the Foothills?

Book once you know your project or departure date. Set pickup before your travel date, so the box isn’t left behind.

An ASU study found 34% of seasonal homeowners arrive in October. It found 57% leave in April. (From ASU’s Yuma Winter Visitors Report 2017–18, published 2019. It is older, but it is the latest headcount we found.)

Arriving now. October is the top arrival month for seasonal owners in that study. A summer away can leave a fall fix-up list. Old furniture, carport junk and yard debris all add up.

Leaving in spring. April is the top departure month, so close-up jobs can stack up then. Plan the dumpster around your departure date. Leave a few days between pickup and the drive north.

If you won’t be in town, ask the hauler how booking by phone works. Ask too whether delivery can happen when no one is home. Read our tips on snowbird open-up and close-up cleanouts. Rather not lift the heavy pieces? A junk removal crew can clear a snowbird close-up.

Where does Foothills debris go?

Your roll-off load goes to a commercial site, such as a landfill. Small loads you haul yourself can go free to the county’s North Gila Valley Transfer Site.

Copper Mountain is east of the Foothills, off I-8 near Wellton. Republic Services runs it, per a 2021 ADEQ notice. Which site the hauler uses is up to them. Ask on the call if you’re curious.

Farther east on I-8, Wellton has many of the same mobile-home and seasonal jobs. See dumpster rental in Wellton.

For a pickup load or two, the free North Gila site may cost you nothing but gas. A dumpster makes sense when the job is too big to haul yourself. See the North Gila Valley Transfer Site details in our dump guide.

Why not just leave old junk out in the desert?

Because it’s a crime with real penalties. The Sheriff names the desert around the Foothills as an area hit hard by illegal dumping.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office says illegal dumping ranges from a class 2 misdemeanor to a class 6 felony. It depends on the type and amount of debris. A class 6 felony carries up to 2 years in prison and a $150,000 fine.

If you see someone dumping, call the Sheriff’s Office at (928) 783-4427. A dumpster or a free transfer site keeps your debris legal.

Does the Foothills get a free county cleanup?

Some small county subdivisions may qualify, but not often. Yuma County’s Neighborhood Cleanup Program visits each eligible community about once every three years.

Here is how the county program works, based on its web page. Call Yuma County Public Works to confirm the details.

  • It serves unincorporated subdivisions of 10 to 50 homes, west of Avenue 15E.
  • Events run on Saturdays from October to April, usually 7 a.m. to noon.
  • The County holds no more than five cleanups a year.

The City of Yuma’s free cleanup is for city-limits residents, so it doesn’t cover most of the Foothills. Ask Yuma County Public Works if your subdivision qualifies and when its turn comes up. If you can’t wait, a 10-yard often fits a small garage or yard cleanup.
