Cancelling or moving your delivery date

Plans change. Here’s what to ask before you book, so a change doesn’t cost you much.

Can I cancel a dumpster rental, and what does it cost?

Usually yes, but the fee varies by company. Reported fees range from $25 to about $210 for late or same-day cancellation.

Each company sets its own cancellation policy. Ask for it on the call, before you agree to a delivery date. Find out the cutoff time too. Some companies charge less when you cancel earlier.

Cancellation feeVaries, reported from $25 to about $210You cancel late or on the same day
Trip fee (dry run)Customers report about $195–$200The truck comes, but the driver can’t drop or pick up

Figures come from customer reviews of dumpster companies, gathered from 2024 to 2026. They are market context, not a quote. Your exact terms are confirmed on the call.

Once you cancel, ask for a written note that says so. In one national review, a company kept billing a customer after a cancellation. An email from the hauler is your proof.

Can I reschedule my delivery or pickup?

Usually, if you call early. Ask the hauler how much notice a new date needs and whether moving it costs anything.

Call the hauler, not this site, once your order is booked. Ask for the hauler’s direct number when you book. Then you can change the date without waiting on a callback.

Don’t let the truck show up to a blocked spot. If cars, trailers or a locked gate stop the driver, you may pay a trip fee. Moving the date ahead of time is cheaper than a failed trip. See how to get ready for delivery day.

What if a monsoon storm hits on delivery day?

Ask the hauler how they handle weather delays. Storms can flood streets and slow trucks down.

Monsoon season runs June 15 to September 30. Heavy rain and dust storms can delay a delivery or pickup. Ask on the call whether a weather delay counts against your rental days.

Neighbors and other people’s dumpsters

An open dumpster draws other people’s trash. Here’s how to protect yours, and what to do before you use someone else’s.

What can I do if neighbors put trash in my dumpster?

Cover it, keep it out of sight if you can, and talk to them early. Their trash adds weight, and you pay for that weight.

Your rental includes a set weight. Each ton over it typically costs $50–$100 in Yuma, as of October 2026. Your exact rate is confirmed on the call. A neighbor’s old couch or a few bags of yard waste can push you over. Read how overage charges work in Yuma.

These steps help keep your dumpster yours.

  • Tarp it. Cover the box when you’re not loading it. A tarp also keeps rain out.
  • Place it close to the house. A driveway spot near the garage is harder to reach than one at the curb.
  • Ask nicely first. Let them know you pay for every ton that goes in.
  • Note what isn’t yours. Take dated photos if strange items show up.
  • Check for banned items. Someone else’s tires, batteries or paint can mean a fee for you. Pull them out before pickup.

If dumping keeps happening, tell the hauler. Ask whether they can pick up sooner.

Can I throw my trash in someone else’s dumpster?

Not without asking. Someone rented it, and they pay for every pound that goes in.

A dumpster in a driveway, at a job site or on a street belongs to the hauler. The person renting it pays for the space and the weight. Adding your trash raises their bill. It can also add a banned item they get charged for.

We couldn’t find a Yuma rule that covers this exact case, so we won’t guess at the law. Ask the renter first. Some people say yes, and some will ask you to chip in.

Can I use an open dumpster I see on a public street?

No, not unless the person who rented it says yes. A street spot doesn’t make it a public trash can.

Have a few loads of household junk? Yuma County runs transfer sites that are free for county residents with household loads. See the Yuma dump guide for sites and hours.

Wind, storms and damage from a street dumpster

Yuma’s summer storms bring strong wind. Here’s how to think about damage, and how to lower the risk.

Who pays if wind pushes my dumpster into a car?

It depends on your rental agreement and your insurance. Read the agreement’s damage section before you sign, and ask your insurance agent.

Read what your agreement says about damage while the dumpster sits at your address. Wording differs between companies. Ask the hauler three things on the call.

  1. Who is responsible if the dumpster moves or damages property?
  2. Does the hauler carry insurance that covers a parked dumpster?
  3. What should you do first if something happens?

Then call your own insurance agent. Ask whether your homeowner’s or renter’s policy covers damage from a rented dumpster. We can’t give legal advice, so get those answers from the people who can.

If damage happens, take photos right away. Call the hauler and write down the time and date.

How do I keep wind from moving the dumpster or blowing debris out?

Put it on your driveway when you can, keep the load low and level, and tarp it before storms.

  • Choose the driveway. A dumpster on level ground off the street is away from parked cars and traffic.
  • Load heavy items flat on the bottom. A low, even load is less likely to shift.
  • Cover light debris. Dust storms, also called haboobs, can lift cardboard and insulation out of an open box.
  • Avoid low spots. Don’t place it across a drainage path or in a spot that floods.
  • Watch the forecast. Monsoon season runs June 15 to September 30.

Base access at MCAS Yuma or Yuma Proving Ground

Both bases control who comes through the gate. Here’s what each base tells visitors, and what to confirm before booking.

Can a dumpster be delivered on base?

Ask on the call before you book. Base delivery isn’t confirmed for every hauler, and the driver needs base access first.

The local roll-off company we connect you with decides whether it can deliver on base. Tell the hauler the base, the gate and the exact spot. Then ask what the driver needs to get in. Also check with your housing office or unit about where a dumpster may go.

Need a dumpster near the base? Call (928) 296-5462 and ask about base access. Calls are answered 24/7.

What does MCAS Yuma ask visitors for?

Visitors without a military or DoD ID get a visitor pass at the main gate. MCAS Yuma asks for a driver’s license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance.

That’s the visitor rule in MCAS Yuma’s own published guidance. We couldn’t confirm whether MCAS Yuma requires a REAL ID, so check the base’s visitor page. A truck driver making a delivery may face other steps, so the hauler should check with the base. Rules can change with security levels.

What does Yuma Proving Ground ask visitors for?

Yuma Proving Ground asks for a REAL ID license, or extra documents with a non-REAL ID license. Visitors also need vehicle registration and proof of insurance.

YPG has not accepted non-REAL ID licenses on their own since August 31, 2023. Visitors without a military ID or a government CAC go through a background check at the Visitor Control Center. The center is open Monday to Thursday. Check the YPG visitor page for current hours before you go.

Booking a dumpster from out of state

Many Yuma homes are owned by winter visitors who live somewhere else part of the year. Here’s how a long-distance booking usually works.

Can I book a dumpster from another state?

Yes, you can call from anywhere, and calls are answered 24/7. Ask the hauler whether they take remote bookings for your address.

Many seasonal owners live out of state part of the year. An ASU study found 34% of seasonal homeowners arrive in October and 57% leave in April (2017–18 report, published 2019, so older data). Those months bring open-up and close-up cleanouts.

Ask the hauler to email you the full quote. It should list the size, price, tons included, rental days and every fee. Keep it until the final bill is paid.

How do I set up delivery and pickup when I’m not in Yuma?

Pick your dates around your trip, and line up someone local who can check on the dumpster. Confirm both with the hauler.

  • Set pickup before you leave. Don’t leave a box sitting while you’re away. Extra days typically cost $10–$30 each in Yuma, as of October 2026, confirmed on the call.
  • Have a local contact. A neighbor, park manager or property manager can clear the spot and watch the box.
  • Get park or HOA approval in writing. RV parks and HOAs often have their own rules.
  • Share gate codes ahead of time. A locked gate can mean a trip fee.
  • Ask how payment works. Pay the hauler directly. Never send card details through this site’s form.

The cleanout dumpster guide covers snowbird and estate cleanouts in more detail.
