What kinds of Somerton jobs need a dumpster?

Most likely remodels, additions, landscaping and garage cleanouts. Somerton’s homes are newer, and most are lived in by their owners.
| Somerton fact (ACS 2020–2024) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Population | 14,574 |
| Median year homes were built | 2002 |
| Homes lived in by their owners | 73.7% |
| Median household income | $74,015 |
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024, via Census Reporter.
Half of Somerton’s homes were built in 2002 or later. The city’s median household income is higher than in Yuma, San Luis or Fortuna Foothills. For comparison, the Yuma County figure is $62,876.
Newer homes owned by the people living in them often mean upgrade work. Think kitchen and bath remodels, room additions, new patios and yard makeovers.
Can I take remodel debris to the South County Transfer Station?
Small household loads, yes, and they’re free for Yuma County residents. Commercial loads are not accepted.
The station sits at 5563 W. County 19th St in Somerton. It opened in August 2026. It’s open Thursday to Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It’s the closest county transfer site to Somerton.
The County’s July 2026 transfer station guide lists these rules.
- One load per customer per day.
- One trailer or one truck bed, piled no more than two feet above the cab.
- No commercial, industrial or oversize loads.
That works for a few bags or one pickup load. A remodel is a different story. If a contractor hauls your debris, the County may treat it as a commercial load and turn it away. If you haul it yourself, you get one truck bed a day, three days a week. Not sure your load qualifies? Call Yuma County Public Works at 928-341-2500 before you drive out.
See the South County Transfer Station hours and rules in our dump guide.
Self-haul or roll-off for a Somerton remodel
| Self-haul to South County | Roll-off dumpster | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to dump | Free for county residents | Typical Yuma price, confirmed on the call |
| Loads | One truck bed per day | One box, about 3 to 12 pickup loads by size |
| Days | Thursday to Saturday | The box stays on site, usually about 7 days |
| Commercial loads | Not accepted | Remodel debris accepted, within the weight limit |
| Your work | Load, drive and unload each trip | Load once, the hauler takes it away |
For commercial and large loads, the Sheriff’s Office lists the South Yuma County Landfill, Copper Mountain Landfill and the Republic Services transfer station in Yuma. The hauler picks the site.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Somerton?
We found no written City rule either way. Call Somerton City Hall at 928-722-7400 before you book, especially if it must sit on a street.
Somerton is an incorporated city. That means City of Yuma permits don’t cover it. The City of Somerton’s website lists encroachment permits under its Public Works department, with an online permit portal. We could not find a written City rule on whether a roll-off on the street needs one. So ask City Hall before you book.
An 85350 address isn’t always inside city limits. Part of Gadsden, an unincorporated community, also has 85350 addresses, and Yuma County handles those. See dumpster rental in Gadsden if that’s you.
Your HOA may have its own rules too. If you have one, ask whether it must approve a dumpster in your driveway. Check the truck’s path as well. One national broker says the truck needs about 60 feet of straight-line space and 23 to 25 feet of overhead clearance. Read more on driveway, street and HOA placement.
What size dumpster fits a Somerton remodel or addition?

Ask about a 20-yard first for a kitchen or flooring job. Heavy debris like rock, tile or concrete suits a 10-yard instead.
| Somerton job | Size to ask about first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom remodel or tile tear-out | 10-yard | Heavy debris hits the weight limit before the box fills |
| Kitchen remodel, flooring or drywall | 20-yard | Bulky, lighter debris needs room |
| Landscaping with old rock, sod or pavers | 10-yard | Rock and soil are very heavy |
| Garage cleanout | 10 or 20-yard | Depends on how much furniture and boxes |
| Room addition or patio cover build | 20 or 30-yard | Framing scraps, packaging and drywall add up over weeks |
The 20-yard is about 22 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 4.5 feet high. It holds about 6 pickup-truck loads. The 10-yard is about 14 by 7.5 by 3.5 feet, or about 3 pickup loads. Those sizes come from Budget Dumpster’s published specs.
A 20-yard in Yuma typically includes about 3 tons. Each extra ton typically costs $50–$100. Tell the hauler if you’re tossing rock, dirt or concrete. Read more about remodel and construction dumpsters.
Does Somerton’s fall cleanup take remodel debris?
No. The City’s yearly cleanup campaign has picked up bulky household items, not construction waste.
In 2022 the campaign ran from September to about October 19, per the Yuma Sun. It took furniture, appliances and branches under 4 feet. It did not take construction waste or hazardous waste. That report is older, and we could not find 2026 dates on the City’s website as of October 24, 2026.
Check with the City for this year’s schedule. If the pickup has already passed your street, a 10-yard often fits a small garage or yard cleanup. Drywall, cabinets and tile from a remodel need a dumpster either way.
Why is County 19th Street a problem for illegal dumping?

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office names County 19th near Somerton as one of the county’s illegal dumping hotspots.
Illegal dumping ranges from a class 2 misdemeanor to a class 6 felony. It depends on the type and amount of debris. A class 6 felony carries up to 2 years in prison and a $150,000 fine.
Be careful who hauls your junk. Ask any hauler where the load is going. If you see someone dumping, call the Sheriff’s Office at 928-783-4427. Read more on why desert dumping is a crime in Yuma County.
Where do Somerton residents take paint, oil and tires?
Paint, oil and chemicals go to the free City of Yuma hazardous waste event. The next one is Saturday, November 14, 2026, 8 a.m. to noon.
The household hazardous waste event is held at Yuma Public Works, 1473 S. 2nd Ave. It’s open to City of Yuma and Yuma County residents. It takes motor oil, paint, cleaners, pesticides, most batteries, electronics and up to 5 tires off the wheel. Call Yuma Public Works at 928-373-4500 to confirm.
Tires can also go to the South County station. The County’s July 2026 item list sets a limit of five tires per resident per calendar year, with fees after five. Call Yuma County Public Works to confirm how that works at this site. Tires, paint, oil, chemicals and batteries can’t go in a standard roll-off. See what can go in a dumpster before you load.
