Dumpster vs Junk Removal in Yuma and Which One Costs Less

Dumpster vs junk removal comes down to two things. How much you’re throwing out, and who does the lifting. A junk crew loads and hauls for you, priced by how much truck space you fill. A roll-off dumpster sits in your driveway for about a week while you load it yourself. For a few items, a crew, the City cleanup or a free county site often costs less. For a remodel, a roof or a full house, a dumpster usually wins.

Your call can go to a local company for a roll-off dumpster or for junk removal with a crew that does the lifting. We don’t book dump trailers or Bagsters. This guide compares all six options so you can pick the right one, even when it isn’t ours.

Junk removal or a dumpster, which do I need?

Pick junk removal if you have a few bulky items and no one to lift them. Pick a dumpster if you have several truckloads and can load it yourself.

The big difference is labor. A junk crew sends people who carry everything out. With a dumpster, you or your helpers do the loading. In return, you get days to fill it at your own pace.

Volume is the second difference. A crew charges for the share of its truck you fill. A dumpster price covers the whole box and a set weight, whether you fill it or not.

How does junk removal pricing work?

Hand truck stacked with boxes in front of a cluttered open garage

Most junk crews price by how much of their truck you fill. Heavy items, extra workers and travel can add to it.

A national cost guide from LawnStarter puts the average household job at about $225 a load. Most people pay $115 to $450. These are national figures, not Yuma quotes.

Junk removal by truck share (national averages, LawnStarter, updated 2025-12-27)

Share of the truckAbout how muchNational average
1/8 truck (a minimum at some crews)2–3 cubic yards$90
1/4 truck3–4.5 cubic yards$160
1/2 truck4.5–11 cubic yards$375
3/4 truck11–13 cubic yards$520
Full truckUp to 20 cubic yards$675

Some crews charge a flat rate for one big item, like a couch or a dryer. Others add fees for heavy items, extra workers or long drives. Ask for the full price before the crew starts loading.

A crew fits best when no one can lift the heavy pieces. That can happen in estate and snowbird cleanouts. For a big house with helpers on hand, compare it with a dumpster for a home cleanout.

Is a dump trailer cheaper than a dumpster?

Pickup truck towing a dump trailer loaded with yard debris and broken boards on a gravel road

It can be for a small job, if you can tow it and unload it yourself. You also pay the dump’s charge on top of the trailer rental.

Some Yuma companies now rent dump trailers. You load the trailer, tow it to a disposal site and dump it. Then you bring it back. Every step takes your time and a vehicle that can tow it.

Where you dump matters most.

  • Household loads. The free county transfer sites take one load a day. The County limits that to one trailer or one truck bed. See the rules at every county site.
  • Contractor loads. The county sites refuse commercial loads. Those go to a landfill or the Republic transfer station, which charge for trash.
  • Roofing. The County’s item list says no shingles or roofs at its transfer sites. So a trailer of shingles goes to a landfill or the Republic transfer station, and you pay that site’s fee.

What the landfill charges per ton is called a tipping fee. We found no published per-ton rate for any Yuma landfill. Call the site before you haul, using the phone numbers in the Yuma dump guide.

A dumpster price already includes the tipping fee for a set weight. That’s why a dumpster can come out ahead on heavy jobs like a roof tear-off.

Is a Bagster a better deal than a 10-yard dumpster?

A Bagster can cost less for about 3 cubic yards of light debris. For more than that, a 10-yard dumpster holds over three times as much.

A Bagster is a bag sold in stores. You fill it, then book a pickup. The Bagster website lists these limits.

  • Size. 3 cubic yards, up to 3,300 pounds.
  • Heavy debris. No more than 1 cubic yard of things like dirt, rock, brick or concrete.
  • Pickup fee. It’s separate from the bag price and varies by market.
  • Placement. On your property, not under wires or trees, and within 16 feet of the street, alley or driveway edge.

We could not confirm that Bagster pickup is offered in Yuma. Check your ZIP code on the Bagster site before you buy a bag.

Can the City’s bulky pickup replace a dumpster?

For furniture and household junk in Yuma city limits, sometimes yes. It runs only part of the year, and it won’t take construction debris.

The City of Yuma Neighborhood Cleanup is free curbside pickup for bulky items. It covers city-limits homes in 10 zones, one zone at a time. In 2026 it ran from January 26 to early April. It does not take construction debris or household hazardous waste. Tree limbs must be under 4 feet and 50 pounds.

The 2027 dates were not posted when we checked. Call City of Yuma Public Works at 928-373-4500 to confirm.

The County program holds no more than 5 events a year. Each community gets one every 3 years. Ask Yuma County Public Works at 928-341-2500 whether your area qualifies.

So why rent a dumpster instead? The cleanup can’t take remodel or roof debris. It may not come to your street when you need it. And it can’t help a landlord turning over a unit in July.

Is it cheaper to haul it myself to a county transfer site?

Yes, for a few loads of household junk. Yuma County’s transfer sites are free for household, non-commercial loads.

Self-haul trades money for time. The County allows one load per customer per day, in one truck bed or one trailer. Most sites open only some days of the week. The North Gila Valley site is the only one open every day.

The South County Transfer Station in Somerton is free for Yuma County residents. It opened in August 2026 and is open Thursday to Saturday. It takes no commercial dumping. That means contractors can’t use it.

Full addresses, hours and item rules are in the list of free county transfer sites. For a cost side-by-side, see when hauling it yourself costs less.

Paint, oil and chemicals can’t go in a dumpster. Take them to the City’s free household hazardous waste drop-off. The next one is Saturday, November 14, 2026, 8 a.m. to noon, for City of Yuma and Yuma County residents.

When is a dumpster not the best choice?

When the job is small, the timing fits a free program, or no one can do the lifting. In those cases, skip the dumpster.

  • A few items. One couch or a few bags fit in a truck bed. A free county site or a junk crew costs less.
  • No one can lift. A crew carries things out for you. With a dumpster, you still do the loading.
  • City homes during the cleanup season. In 2026 it ran late January to early April. Bulky furniture may go free, if your zone’s date fits.
  • Tires and hazardous waste. These can’t go in a dumpster. See what it costs to throw away tires and what can and can’t go in a dumpster.
  • No room for the truck. A roll-off truck needs about 60 feet of straight-line space and 23–25 feet of overhead clearance. Read where a dumpster can go in Yuma before you book.

When does a roll-off dumpster make more sense?

When you have several truckloads, heavy debris, contractor work or a deadline. One delivery replaces many dump runs.

  • Remodels and roof tear-offs. Shingles can’t go to the county sites, and the debris adds up to many loads.
  • Contractor jobs. Commercial loads can’t use the free county sites.
  • Full house cleanouts. You can load over several days instead of booking a crew for every room.
  • No truck or trailer. The hauler brings the box and hauls the full load away.
  • A deadline. A move-out date or a closing doesn’t wait for the next cleanup zone.

Is renting a dumpster worth it?

It’s worth it when your debris is more than about three pickup loads. Below that, self-haul often costs less, and a junk crew may too.

Here’s a simple way to check. A 10-yard dumpster holds about 3 pickup loads. A 20-yard holds about 6. The free county sites take one load per day. So a 20-yard job means about six days of dump runs if you self-haul.

Then add the weight. Concrete, dirt, shingles and wet drywall are heavy. They fill a dumpster’s weight limit before they fill the box. Tell the hauler what you’re throwing out when you call.
